Interpretive landscape design

Geotourism or getting to know a geographic locality can be fascinating and rewarding. The creative discipline of heritage interpretation, dating back to the founding of national parks in the USA a hundred years ago, is about making natural and cultural heritage exciting, interesting and important to ordinary people. It is traditionally the territory of rangers and guides, but where these are not available there is much that can be achieved through fixtures on site. Supported by historians and biologists, good interpretive landscape design will not only communicate values and information to visitors but also stimulate personal reflection and contribute structurally to the preservation of the site itself. I have been an co-ordinating member of Interpret Europe since 2014.
