Nature trail for the Barnimhang, Berlin
How does one raise public support and interest for features which for most people are scarcely noticeable? Barnimhang is one of the last unbuilt sections of the ancient river banks from the time of melting glaciers. The land is under cultivation but there are interesting flora and fauna due to the soils and location. We designed a trail which takes visitors from one point of interest to the next, each marked by a signifier made of corten steel in which the object of interest is depicted. A QR-code links the visitor’s smartphone to an internet page with information and in the ‘NatChat’ forum a community of enthusiasts grows up around the site filling it up with round-the-year observations and adding both to our knowledge and our appreciation of it.
